good morning, tracee. >> reporter: good morning, joe. they have the sign over my shoulder trying to get drivers prepared for the change that's expected to come later on today. as you can see there, it's supposed to close. this is the ramp onto 495 southbound from gallows road north. vdot is going to start the work to actually replace this ramp. it's all part of the ongoing hot lanes project. they do have a workaround for you. they're telling drivers to keep straight, going past nova fairfax hospital, turn right on arlington boulevard, and follow the sign they have for the outer loop if you're not familiar with the area. drivers here will use gallows road to prepare for possible backups this morning. again, drivers will have to get used to this for the next two weeks. tracee wilkins, live in annandale. let's go back to the studio. >> tracee, thanks very much. a man is behind bars this morning accused of murdering a cab driver. 40-year-old domingo ezirike was found shot to death inside his cab at anacostia avenue and

ponds street northeast saturday morning. police arrested rashad terrell slye. a friend of ezirike told news 4 he worked for silver cab company and was working late to make extra money to spend on his children. right now the sick new hampshire woman who was evacuated from the south pole to new zealand is on her way back to the united states. renee nicole douceur will check in at johns hopkins hospital tonight for observation. she began experiencing vision, language, and memory problems while working at the south pole research station. doctors say she had a stroke and should make a full recovery with proper treatment. right now in turkey, rescue teams are searching for survivors among the rubble of flattened buildings after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake. the worst damage is in the eastern cities of ercz and van. at least 200 people are dead, but the fear is the death toll

could reach 1,000. rescuers and survivors are dealing with harsh conditions, but the extreme cold is not stopping people from digging through the rubble, in many cases by hand. the work has paid off with several rescues over the last 24-hour pieriod. as this man says through an interpreter, waiting for word about loved ones still missing is difficult. >> translator: we went to all the hospitals but haven't been able to find our friend, he says. i pray to god our friend has survived. >> the earthquake hit at lunchtime on monday, sending several people scrambling into the streets. a deadly shark attack killed a man off the coast of australia. 32-year-old george wainwright of houston, was driving near perth on saturday when attacked. his friends tried to save him, but the injuries were way too he severe. another surfer killed in september, and a swimmer was attacked two weeks ago. australian authorities have issued a catch to kill order for all great white sharks.

some are unhappy about this move because great whites are an endangered species. today president obama is heading west to push his jobs bill and introduce new initiatives, he says, will help the economy. the president will be in nevada today where he'll suggest a change in mortgage rules to make it easier for borrowers to switch to cheaper loans even with little or no equity. another major plan is a student loan initiative he'll unveil on wednesday in denver. neither of these moves require congressional approval, so they could be put into place weather quickly. and president obama's push for his $440 billion jobs plan comes as a new report of a credit downgrade for the u.s. bank of america-merrill lynch says moody's or fitch may downgrade the credit score. it comes from congress' failure to agree on a long term deficit

reduction plan. john beck played well, but the skins defense gave up more than 400 yards yesterday to the carolina panthers. the panthers and skins traded field goals until the fourth quarter, when carolina led by as much as 13 points. washington clawed its way back to within ten, but later on beck threw an interception sealing the game for carolina. dan hellie spoke to coach mike shanahan about this disappointing loss. >> what's the hardest part to digest for you? >> well, it's always tough to lose. going into the second half, you feel like you've got an opportunity to come away with the win. so you're disappointed when you don't. >> your defense gave up 33 points. was that more your defense or just cam newton making plays? >> well, you know, a combination of both. our defense has been very good on third downs. we've been playing pretty consistent. he did a good job with the option keeping this off balance.

cam really kept us off balance. he made a couple of throws on third down that many quarterback cans can't make. and he had a couple of drives that kept his offense going. hats off to the panthers. they made a bunch of plays, and cam newton did a fantastic job. >> is there anybody that comes to mind after seeing him in person that you can compare cam newton to? >> as a rookie, i'm not sure i've been around a rookie that has this type of presence and athletic ability. it was impressive to be out there and seeing him make those plays with his legs and have the poise to make a couple of those throws. >> the biggest concerns coming in on offense had to be the offensive line. you didn't know what you were getting in john beck. you hadn't played in the start of a regular season game in a long time. both were relatively solid. were you pleased with their performance? >> i was very pleased with john's overall performance. i thought they did a good job. that's what you're hoping for, a guy who gets this opportunity to play well and just keep on getting better. john hasn't had a lot of games

in the national football league. he does have a lot of talent. you can see his quick release and his poise, especially in some tough situations. and the offensive line, i thought, overall did some good things. we had montgomery moving in at center guard. you got a guy like chris cooley out, and santana goes down right away, and a couple of young receivers come in and play good. so disappointing loss. very disappointed. i can do a better job of getting these guys ready to play because we should have played better than that. >> you're now down five starters on offense. i know you never make injury as an excuse, but you have to feel a bit down that two weeks in a row you're missing these guys. >> you just hope it's not for a season. you lose guys for a couple of weeks here and there. it's tough to lose corey. we'll find out later on today what the situation is and a couple of our other players. >> rough loss. >> indeed. >> both personnel and the game.

welcome back at 5:15. the trial for the woman accused of murdering her coworker will start today. brittany norwood is accused of killing jayna murray inside a bethesda clothing store back in march. megan mcgrath is live with more on what's expected to happen today. megan, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, eun.

jury selection could take a while, possibly a day and a half. there are 300 people in that jury pool. they were questioned by attorneys about what they know about this case and whether they have any opinions or connections that would prevent them from being open and unbiased. brittany norwood is accused of killing her lululemon coworker jayna murray in march. brittany beat jayna in the store and then tied herself up in an attempt to cover up the crime. norwood told investigators she was also the victim. the two masked men assaulted them and then killed murray. the story then fell apart. the dna evidence didn't support it, and norwood was charged with murder. once jury selection is completed, then we're going to move on to opening arguments and the trial phase. this trial could last possibly two weeks. if convicted, norwood could get life in prison without parole. eun, back to you. >> megan mcgrath live in rockville for us this morning. megan, thank you.

a trial of the former security chief at the upper big branch mine will get under way. he is accused of lying to investigators, destroying security documents, and refusing to give a heads up when inspectors showed up at the mine. 29 miners were killed and 2 others injured in the explosion. if convicted, stover could be sentenced up to 25 years in prison. the u.s. is among countries calling for an investigation into the death of libyan leader moammar gadhafi. early reports say the former dictator died in cross fire after rebels pulled him from a drainage ditch. new reports show the captors may have executed him in an ambulance. an autopsy shows that he died of a bullet to the head. some say how gadhafi died will set the tone of libya's governing future. people have lined up to see gadhafi's body since his death being kept in a produce storage

room in the port city of misrata. libya's transitional council hopes to hold elections within the next eight months. thousands celebrated in a day of liberation this weekend in benghazi. that's where the civil war started. the transitional council is calling for an islamist type government for libya and to avoid all laws that contradict that. today reverend fred shuttles worth will be laid to death. the baptist leader helped establish the southern leadership conference with martin luther king jr. he was instrumental in organizing the freedom marches in alabama that eventually led to the civil rights movement. he will be laid to rest in alabama. he was 89 years old. an e-mail looks like official notice from the government, but it could wreak havoc on your computer. the e-mail looks like it's from the internal revenue service with an irs.gov domain name. once you open the e-mail, the computer will be infected with a virus. the federal government wants to

remind you that the irs does not communicate via e-mail. police and the irs are now trying to figure out who is sending out these e-mails. a new study is raising more concerns about the impact a controversial chemical has on the development of our children. researchers at the harvard school of public health studied more than 200 pregnant mothers and followed them for three years after their child was born. they found women with higher levels of bpa, a chemical found in most plastics were more likely to have daughters that were more susceptible to behavior problems. >> girls with a higher exposure to bpa during gestation had more depression, anxiety, hyperactivity, and aggression. >> the study found no links for boys, though. it also found no link between kids bpa levels after they were born and behavior issues. researchers caution and more studies needed to look at the long term health impact of that

chemical. a new study shows that women are more likely to suffer severe injuries in car accidents than man. many say it's because safety features are not tailored to women. they study crash data across the country from 1998 to 2008. women with seat belt restrands are 48% more likely to suffer severe injuries in crashes and to suffer more chest and spine injuries than men. researchers say it's because women are shorter, lighter, and sit differently from men. right now forecasters tracking a powerful tropical storm in the caribbean. tropical storm rina is off the coast of honduras and nicaragua. it has winds of 40 miles per hour. they expect rina to gain strength in the next 24 hours and become a hurricane by the end of the week. >> 5:21. time kierein here to look at the forecast. we're neer the end of the hurricane season, right? >> it is winding down.

money and promote healing. a concert was held on the grounds of the volunteer fire department to cover funeral expenses for 16-year-old jacqueline. it will also pay medical expenses for sawyer smith who was injured in the crash. he is grateful for the support. >> everyone that's prayed for me and everything, it's really helped. like all the support, like all my friends and everything, my family coming out here. >> the benefit raise more than $13,000 for the two families affected by the crash. meanwhile, sawyer plans to return to high school for the first time since the crash on tuesday. the world series is going back and forth. now it's all tied up at two games apiece. the rangers shut down the cardinals offense yesterday. the texas starting pitcher derek holland allowed two hits while striking out seven batters. mike napoli provided the offense for the rangers, hitting a three-run home run in the sixth, and the rangers cruised to a 4-0

perry and the rest of the candidates. brian, good morning to you. >> reporter: the gop and presidential candidates don't agree on a lot, but over the weekend, they were in perfect harmony on criticizing president obama's decision to pull the u.s. troops out of iraq. this week the candidates are expected to focus back on more -- issues a little closer to home, domestic issues, including the economy. rick perry is expected to unveil his new economic and jobs creation plan. he wants to steal a little of the thunder of herman kanecain' 9-9-9 plan. however, mr. perry is going to get a little more attention for something, an interview in this sunday's magazine in which he raised again the birther issue. he had dinner and discussed whether he was born in the united states. when he asked if president obama was born in the united states or

not, he said, well, i don't have a definitive answer. >> thanks very much. brian mooar reporting live. brian? today president obama is once again hitting the road to push his jobs bill and is also set to announce new initiatives to boost the economy. the president will be in nevada where he'll suggest a change in mortgage rules to make it easier for borrowers who face the loss of their home to adjust their rates. he'll also announce a jobs plan in denver. neither of these moves require congressional approval, so they could be put into place rather quickly. the u.s. is set to downgrade its credit rating by the end of the year. analysts believe moody's or fitch will downgrade the credit rating because of congress' likely failure to agree on a long term deficit reduction plan. the downgrade could cause further damage to an already sluggish economy. right now rescue teams in

turkey are digging through rubble searching for survivors trapped in collapsed buildings from the magnitude 7.2 earthquake. angie goff is in the newsroom monitoring the ongoing rescue efforts. >> working with torch lights and using their bare hands, rescue workers continue to work desperately to find survivors this morning. new video from overnight shows several people were pulled from the rubble. hundreds are feared to still be trapped. the 7.2 magnitude quake killed more than 200 people, and officials say that number could surpass 1,000. more than 1,200 rescue workers are using everything from their hands to shovels to dig through what's left of dozens of buildings. hardest hit, the eastern towns of erkz and van where scores of people are still missing. >> it's extremely dangerous for people inside at the time. >> translator: we went to all the hospitals but haven't been

washington clawed its way back to within ten points. late in the game, john beck threw, yes, that interception. that sealed the game for carolina. news 4's dan hellie spoke with head coach mike shanahan about the once again disappointing loss. >> what's the hardest part of this one to digest for you? >> well, it's always tough to lose. got the game going in the second half, you feel like you get an opportunity to come away with the win. it's always disappointing when you don't. >> the defense gives up 33 points. was that more your defense, or was that cam newton just making plays? >> well, you know, a combination of both. our defense has been very good on third downs. we've been playing very consistent. they did a good job of keeping us off balance. cam had an opportunity to keep the ball, and that really kept us off balance. he made a couple throws on third downs that most quarterbacks can't make and had a couple runs there too that kept a couple drives going. take my hat off to their

football team today. they made a bunch of plays. cam newton played fantastic today. >> is there anyone that comes to mind that you've seen in person that you can compare cam newton to? >> i'm not sure that i've seen someone as a rookie has this type of presence and athletic ability. after seeing him make the plays and have the poise to complete the throws. >> you said the biggest had to be the offensive line. you didn't know what you were geting in john beck. he hadn't played in the start of a regular season game in a long time. both were relatively solid. were you pleased with their performance? >> i was pleased with john's performance. a good guy. that's what you're hoping for is a guy who gets the opportunity to play well and just keeps getting better. john does have a lot of talent. he's not played a lot of games in the national football league. you can see his quick release and his poise in tough situations. the offensive line, i thought,

overall did some good things. considering we had a new position with montgomery from center to guard. eric cook came in. a guy like chris cooley out and santana goes out right away. a couple of young receivers came in and played for us. disappointing loss. i've got to do a better job getting these guys ready to play. we should do better than that. >> you're now down five starters on offense. i know you never make injury an excuse. >> you're always disappointed when you lose guys, but you just hope it's not for the season. you lose a guy for a couple of weeks here and there. it's tough to lose corey. trent, i think, is going to be coming back. we'll find out later today exactly what the situation is with a couple of our other players. >> the skins will take on the buffalo bills next week in toronto. this morning the jury selection will begin in the lululemon murder trial. brittany norwood is accused of killing her coworker inside the bethesda yoga store back in

march. megan mcgrath is live at the courthouse with the latest. megan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, eun. this was a high profile case that received a lot of media attention. choosing a jury could take a day and a half. they have a pool of 300 people they'll be choosing from. those folks will be questioned by attorneys. they'll be questioned about what they know about this case. whether they have any opinions or connections that would prevent them from sitting on the jury. brittany norwood is accuseded of killing her lululemon coworker jayna murray last march. police say that norwood beat murray to death inside the store after closing and then cut herself and tied herself up in an attempt to cover up the crime. police say norwood told investigators she was also a victim, that two masked men sexually assaulted them and then killed murray. police, though, say that story soon fell apart. the dna evidence just didn't support it. and norwood was later charged with murder. once jury selection is completed, then we're going to move on to the opening arguments

and the trial, which could take as long as two weeks. if convicted, norwood could get life without parole. again, we're going to start seeing the jury selection process get under way later on here this morning. eun, back to you. >> megan mcgrath live in montgomery county for us this morning. megan, thank you. defense lawyers for the doctor charged in michael jackson's death will be calling witnesses today. dr. conrad murray's lawyers are expected to blame the singer for his own death. defense lawyers will call witnesses including a police officer, and randy philips, the head of aeg live. lawyers have argued that jackson was pressured by philips, the company promoting jackson's appearance in london or else the tour might be cancelled. congresswoman gabrielle giffords getting intensive therapy in north carolina. a therapist who helped her with

her treatment in houston is also with her in asheville, north carolina. giffords has not been seen in public since she voted on a debt limit bill on capitol hill in august. she is scheduled to stay in north carolina for two week. it was an emotional ceremony as apple employees said good-bye to steve jobs. soon you will have the chance to watch that memorial for the apple cofounder. service for jobs, who passed away on october the 5th, was intensely private. now apple says it will post a link on its website today showing the service, which was held last wednesday at the company's campus. at last check, though, the video is still not on the website. jobs' life is also the topic of a new book which goes on sale today. you can be on your way to a new workout courtesy of nbc 4. >> absolutely. today we're giving away a new wii fit plus with a balance board.

still going to see some congestion further up i-95. this is the view at fairfax county parkway, but the traffic here starts at lorton and continues as you make your way towards the springfield interchange. so far on i-95 in virginia, north and south. not seeing any accidents slowing you down. i'm back in ten minutes with another look at traffic. back to you both. hundreds of people laced up their shoes or rolled out their bikes to raise money for the special olympics in maryland. the race took off across the interconnector for the second annual bike ride and 5k. there was also a ten-mile bike ride. the maryland transportation authority and state highway administration sponsored this event. maryland's black bear hunting season kicks off today. the hunt in garrett and allegheny counties lasts through saturday. however, the hunt could end early if the quota of 55 to 80 bears is reached before the weekend. this year 260 hunters have been awarded permits. each year the state allows a

limited number of black bears to be killed to control the population. ever wonder what the view is like from the statue of liberty? you don't have to travel from new york city to see it anymore. the national park service is installing five web cameras on the torch of the statue. they will be turned on on friday during a ceremony that marks the 125th anniversary of the statue's dedication. viewers will be able to see the new york harbor and even read the tablet the statue is holding in her hand. the torch has been off limits to visitors physically since 1916. his movies leave us laughing out loud. >> absolutely. now one of hollywood's funniest actors is being honored for all that work. will ferrell accepted the mark twain prize for american humor yesterday. jack black, matthew broderick, and conan o'brien spoke at the event last night. will ferrell was a favorite on "saturday night live" for seven
